PACK 111 2019 PINEWOOD DERBY
The Derby will take place at Davis Community Church in the Fellowship Hall.
RULES & PROCEDURES
VERY IMPORTANT: For a car to qualify for the Derby, it must be submitted on or before TECH DAY.
TECH DAY will be held on Sunday, January 27th, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Brian Alexander’s garage – 3707 Gaviota Place, Davis, 95618. TECH DAY is an opportunity to weigh the cars and verify they meet all qualifying specifications. If you cannot submit your car on TECH DAY, contact Brian Alexander at firstname.lastname@example.org to make separate arrangements the prior week.
At time of drop-off on TECH DAY, you will be asked whether the car is to be entered in the Boy-Built or Parent-Assisted division. If you enter the Boy-Built division, the parent and scout will be asked to sign a statement that the parent has not had any hands-on assistance…even with the shaping of the car. Verbal assistance is acceptable.
All qualifying cars must meet the following specifications:
Maximum weight: 5 ounces
Maximum length: 7 inches
Maximum width: 2 ¾ inches
Bottom clearance: 3/8 inches
Minimum width between wheels: 1 ¾ inches
Car: The car must have been made during the current Cub Scout year.
Body, Axles and Wheels: ONLY the Official Scout Grand Prix Derby wheels and axles are permitted. All four wheels must be included on the car. Axle nail slots may be moved; however, the bottom clearance must not exceed 3/8 inches and the wheel extension must not cause the car to exceed length or width maximums. The official block of wood must be used as the base of the car; however, paint, plastic items, lead weights and other accessories may be added so long as the car meets size specifications.
Lubricants: The Pack will provide dry graphite for lubrication on race day. Oil-based lubricants are prohibited.
Scouts begin by racing cars from the same rank – Tigers race Tigers, Bears race Bears, etc. Each car will race at least once in each lane. The top 3 cars with the fastest cumulative score in each rank will receive awards. The judges will award additional awards for special entries. All participating scouts will receive Pinewood Derby Badges. At completion of the Pinewood Derby, competition will be conducted for the siblings division.
